Godello wine

Fine and delicate as well as being structured and persistent

Variety of grape with aromatic potential, producing high quality white wines. It is native to Galicia, in particular the banks of the river Sil. It is the most important of DO Valdeorras and Monterrey in the province of Orense, and also in the Bierzo. It has a high level of glycerol with a strong acid gives a very nice bittersweet taste.

Godello wines have undergone a revolution in recent years. Godello has gone from being considered a second-rate variety, living in the shadow of Albariño, to being rediscovered and valued for what it is: A grape with centuries of history that produces very aromatic, voluminous wines with an Atlantic character and that develop exceptionally over time.

The Godello grape is native to the banks of the Sil River. Its origin dates back to Roman times. According to the latest studies on the variety, it is the product of a cross between a variety cultivated by the Romans and wild vines cultivated by the Iberians in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The first references to the variety and its wines date back a long time. At one point, it accounted for a significant amount of vines planted in what we now know as Valdeorras. Today it is still cultivated in the region it originated, in the DO Valdeorras and DO Bierzo. However, it also grows in Monterrei and Ribeiro, where it is the third most common grape by surface area, and the amount is increasing.

The Godello variety has small clusters of greenish-yellow, conical and medium-sized berries. It is quite sensitive to humidity and cold and is best suited to well-drained soils. The plots in high areas produce the most delicate Godellos.

In general, Godello wine is fine and delicate as well as being structured and persistent. It is aromatic and complex with good volume and is smooth on the palate. Citrus, fruit and even floral aromas stand out, alongside mineral and aniseed hints and herbaceous touches. It also has a good aging potential, its aging on lees and in barrels and bottles does great things to this wine.

Godello wine is, without doubt, great for pairing. It goes perfectly with seafood and fish, pasta or rice and thanks to its body and structure, it is even great with white meats or semi-cured cheeses.
